The Labour Party leadership has inaugurated a three-member committee aimed at resolving the strained relationship between some of its National Assembly lawmakers and the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure.
This development was disclosed on Tuesday through a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.
The reconciliation committee comprises lawmakers Ben Etanabene, who will serve as chairman, along with Mathew Nworgu and Chinedu Obika.
The rift between Abure and several Labour Party lawmakers has lingered since last year, following the controversial Anambra convention, which reaffirmed Abure’s leadership.
The disagreement has been further intensified by an internal power tussle involving allies of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
While inaugurating the committee, Abure urged the panel to engage the lawmakers, identify their concerns, and help restore effective communication and unity within the party ranks.
“We have entrusted you with the critical task of reconciling our members in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
It is essential that all 40 of you are aligned with the party leadership,” he said.
“You are our ambassadors at the National Assembly, and we appreciate the values many of you have demonstrated.
However, there are still gaps that must be addressed. We expect this assignment to be completed and reported back to us within two weeks. The party is committed to fostering lasting peace, particularly with key stakeholders such as the NASS caucus.”
In response, the committee members reaffirmed their loyalty to the party and expressed readiness to carry out the assignment diligently.
