Healthcare facilities are meant to be sanctuaries of healing and relief, especially during emergencies. Unfortunately, recent reports, including a firsthand account from one of my staff, Temitope, who was referred to the UNIMED Trauma Centre in Ondo following a road accident, paint a troubling picture of a system in dire need of reform.
UNIMED Trauma Centre, established with the noble intention of offering specialized care, is falling short in critical areas. From my staff’s experience, the facility appears to grapple with systemic inefficiencies, including unresponsive personnel and a lack of accountability. These failings undermine its potential as a lifesaving institution.
Upon arrival at the Centre, Temitope encountered an indifferent attitude from some staff members. The frontline staff, including receptionists and nurses, reportedly displayed unprofessional behavior, causing unnecessary distress to a patient in dire need of care.
The financial burden imposed on patients is another area of concern. Despite being a public institution, patients are reportedly subjected to charges that seem excessive and, at times, dubious. In Temitope’s case, he was charged double for basic services and faced a staggering demand of ₦70,000 for an ambulance to Akure for a critical scan. Such practices not only erode public trust but also raise questions about oversight and governance within the institution.
Equally troubling is the reported unavailability of consultants, who visit the Centre sporadically. This gap in specialist care leaves patients stranded, often exacerbating their conditions. It’s heartbreaking to hear of families outside the facility expressing frustration and despair, with little recourse available.
A Path Forward: Recommendations for Reform
The issues at UNIMED Trauma Centre highlight the urgent need for comprehensive reform. The following steps could pave the way for improved healthcare delivery:
- Thorough Investigation: The Ondo State Government, under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, must launch a transparent investigation into the Centre’s operations to address allegations of extortion and negligence.
- Accountability Measures: Staff implicated in malpractice or unprofessional conduct should face appropriate disciplinary actions to restore public confidence.
- Operational Reforms: Implementing a robust monitoring and evaluation system can ensure that patient care takes precedence over profit. Clear protocols should be established to standardize care delivery.
- Adequate Funding and Resources: Increased government funding can provide the Centre with the tools and personnel required to fulfill its mission effectively.
- Staff Training and Welfare: Regular training and improved welfare packages for healthcare workers can enhance service delivery and foster a culture of empathy and professionalism.
The challenges at UNIMED Trauma Centre are symptomatic of broader issues within the healthcare system. However, these challenges are not insurmountable. With deliberate action and a commitment to reform, the Centre can transform into the beacon of hope it was intended to be.
The people of Ondo State deserve a healthcare system that prioritizes their well-being above all else. It is time for stakeholders—government, healthcare workers, and the community—to work collaboratively to make this vision a reality.
