Ali Ndume clarifies, says I criticize Tinubu’s policies, not him

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has reaffirmed his respect for President Bola Tinubu, clarifying that his criticisms are aimed at government policies rather than the president himself.

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ndume emphasized his long-standing relationship with Tinubu, describing him as a mentor.

While he may disagree with certain government decisions, Ndume stressed that his intent is always to offer constructive criticism for the betterment of Nigeria.

“I am not an opponent of the government. It’s our government. President Tinubu is one of my mentors,” Ndume said.

He went on to explain a viral video showing him and Tinubu in a friendly interaction, explaining that it was part of a casual conversation about visiting the president’s residence.

Ndume also shared an anecdote about Tinubu attending his daughter’s wedding, despite it coinciding with the Nigerian Army Remembrance Day, underscoring their strong relationship.

On the subject of his critiques, Ndume clarified, “I do not criticize my elders. Tinubu is my senior, and I respect him, even if I disagree with some of his policies. I criticize policies, not the person. I did the same with Buhari’s policies, but I have a closer relationship with Tinubu.”

In November, Ndume had voiced strong opposition to the proposed tax reform bills introduced by President Tinubu, calling them “dead on arrival.”

He argued that the government should focus on reducing the tax burden on Nigerians rather than increasing it, particularly criticizing the VAT bill.

“The people are against this VAT bill, and it should be withdrawn. I encourage the president to listen to the advice from the National Economic Council and the Northern Governors’ Forum,” Ndume remarked.

Additionally, Ndume urged President Tinubu to prioritize the implementation of the federal budget, focusing specifically on areas like security and citizens’ welfare.

“If the budget is implemented effectively, Nigerians will see positive changes. Security and welfare should be the main priorities,” Ndume concluded.
