The Airport Police Command in Lagos has apprehended a state-owned bus driver allegedly involved in the death of a 19-year-old pedestrian in a hit-and-run near the international airport.

Spokesperson for the command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, said in a statement on Monday that the incident occurred on Friday at the Airport Bus Stop, Ikeja, and involved an Ashok Leyland bus operating under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.

According to Adeola, preliminary enquiries indicated that the pedestrian had just stepped off the bus and was walking towards the airport terminal when she was knocked down.

“Eyewitnesses rushed the victim to the Air Force Base Hospital for treatment, but doctors confirmed she died on arrival due to severe injuries,” Adeola said.

He explained that officers moved to the hospital immediately after receiving the report and commenced a full-scale investigation.

The driver was said to have fled the scene, prompting the police to launch a manhunt.

Adeola noted that collaboration between operatives and LAMATA officials eventually led to the suspect’s identification and arrest.

“The driver has been taken into custody, made a statement, and further investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Commissioner of Police for the airport command, Olufunke Ogunbode, vowed that due process will be followed to ensure justice for the victim and her family, stressing that reckless driving will not be tolerated.

She appealed to motorists and road users to adhere to traffic rules to prevent avoidable deaths.

The suspect, Adeola added, will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
