Gunmen have killed an 85-year-old community leader and secretary of Iyowa Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The deceased, identified as Hon. Reuben Owie, was reportedly attacked by two unidentified armed men at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhunhun, Benin City.

The incident occurred at about 8:15pm on August 2, 2026, according to the Edo State Police Command.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday.

Ikoedem said the police received a report from the deceased’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, following the attack at the victim’s residence on Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City.

According to the police, two armed men invaded the elderly man’s residence, with one of the assailants allegedly shooting him in the head.

The victim reportedly died from the gunshot injury.

The police spokesperson said officers were immediately deployed to the scene, where they documented the incident and evacuated the deceased.

She added that Owie’s remains had been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital mortuary for further procedures.

Ikoedem said the police had commenced an investigation into the killing and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The command appealed to members of the public who might have useful information about the incident to assist the ongoing investigation by contacting the police.
