‘Masks come off’ – Sowore blast Davido over visit to Wike

Human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over his recent meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Davido and his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, visited Wike at his Abuja residence on Thursday, days after the governor secured victory in the Osun State governorship election.

A short video of the visit circulating on social media showed Davido engaging Wike in a light-hearted exchange over the outcome of the election.

In the footage, the singer repeatedly claimed that he had won, prompting laughter from those around them.

Reacting to the encounter, Sowore accused the singer and the minister of political opportunism, questioning Davido’s decision to engage Wike cordially after the controversy that surrounded the Osun election.

In a post on his X handle, Sowore described the duo as “political hustlers” and criticised Davido for what he called “genuflecting” before Wike.

Sowore wrote, “Nigerian political hustlers will deceive the public, and the gullible will swallow the deception whole.

“Here is the loud and lousy @davido genuflecting before Nyesom Wike @GovWike, barely a week after their ‘agreement is agreement’ election politics in Osun, a contest marred by deadly violence and the loss of scores of lives.”

The activist further alleged that political actors often abandon their public differences when their interests align.

“Behind all the public grandstanding, insults, and manufactured outrage, these political actors know exactly where their interests converge,” he added.

He concluded by describing them as “dissemblers, gerrymanderers, carpetbaggers, political hustlers” and “lying machines,” insisting that their true interests become evident when political stakes are involved.

The controversy followed reports of violence linked to supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the Accord Party before and during the August 15 governorship election.

Governor Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

His visit to Wike came as part of his engagements following his re-election.

The encounter between Davido and Wike has since generated mixed reactions, particularly given the singer’s outspoken opposition to the APC and his criticism of the Federal Government’s handling of the Osun election before the poll.
