A Kaduna man, Aminu Kabiru, has told a Shari’a Court in Kaduna State that his intense love for his wife has affected his concentration at work and reduced his ability to provide adequately for his family.
Kabiru made the disclosure while responding to a divorce application filed by his estranged wife under the Khul’i process.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the defendant said his strong affection for his wife had become a distraction, making it difficult for him to concentrate on his job and earn enough to meet the family’s needs.
He pleaded with the court to give him more time to reconcile with his wife, arguing that their marriage should be preserved in the interest of their two young children.
Kabiru stressed that the welfare of the children should be taken into consideration, noting that both were still below the age of two.
However, the woman, through her counsel, Abubakar Jibril, told the court that she had made up her mind to end the marriage.
Jibril alleged that his client had been living with her parents for about eight months and had not received adequate financial support from her husband during the period.
The lawyer said the couple married in 2024 and had two children, adding that one was 16 months old while the younger child was only two months old.
He further told the court that his client was prepared to return the N100,000 dowry paid for her marriage in order to secure the dissolution of the union.
“The complainant is no longer interested in the marriage and is ready to return the dowry she received,” Jibril told the court.
The presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiya Shehu, subsequently sought clarification on the amount of dowry involved.
Kabiru confirmed that N100,000 was the dowry but argued that he had spent considerably more on his wife before their wedding.
He asked the court to take into account the expenses he claimed to have incurred in connection with the marriage.
The judge adjourned the case to enable Kabiru to provide details of the expenses he said he incurred.
The matter will resume with the court expected to examine the husband’s claims before determining the wife’s application for divorce.
