UNIMED trains 32 emergency medical responders

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo has trained 32 First Emergency Medical Responders with life saving skills.

The training took place at Laje Campus of the university between Dec. 10 and Dec. 13.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED , Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, in a statement , said that the training was an initiative of the university aimed at empowering participants with life-saving skills.

Fatusi added that the training demonstrated the institution’s commitment to community health and preparedness.

He said that the institution had been accredited as a training site for basic life support training of America Heart Association.

“The university is now strategically positioned to help stem avoidable deaths often occasioned by lack of emergency medical responses on Nigeria’s highways through cutting-edge knowledge.

“The first emergency medical responders training held last week, according to Prof. Akingbola, the lead instructor from the United States of America, was to “enhance participants’ understanding of common medical emergencies, equip participants with basic life support skills.

“ These include: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), improve participants’ ability to manage bleeding, shock, and other critical injuries, and foster a sense of community responsibility and preparedness,” the statement said.

The statement quoted the Chairman of Ondo State Hospital Management Board , Mr Fasoranti’, commending the university for the initiative and appreciated Prof. Akingbola for his patriotic commitment.

According to the statement, Fasoranti said that “government is ready to encourage all initiatives that will improve healthcare delivery in Ondo State.

The training programme incorporated a blended learning approach, combining, short video lectures with practical demonstrations and hands-on simulations, and had in attendance police officers, security men, teachers and ambulance drivers.
