One suspected member of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) was killed on Friday during a raid by troops of the Nigerian Army on a camp operated by the group in Abia State.

The operation, which took place in the Ebubengwa/Abayi Nchokoro area of Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, involved personnel from the Army’s 144 Battalion (Rear).

According to a military situation report released on Saturday, the raid led to a gunfight during which one ESN member was neutralized, while an Army officer and a soldier sustained injuries.

The Army reported that the militants fled the camp under heavy fire, leaving behind blood trails, weapons, cash, and various logistics equipment.

Items recovered during the operation included one rocket-propelled grenade, a general-purpose machine gun, four AK-47 rifles, a G3 rifle, three pump-action shotguns, 800 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and 648 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.

Additionally, troops seized N11.75 million and $27,000 in cash, along with two generators, laptops, CCTV systems, mobile phones, a Wi-Fi router, and external hard drives.

The military also discovered ritual garments and food supplies at the camp.

Vehicles and motorcycles recovered or destroyed in the operation included a Honda Pilot SUV, two Toyota Highlander SUVs, a Toyota Hiace bus, a minibus, a tricycle, and two motorcycles.

The Nigerian Army has yet to disclose whether further operations are planned in the area.
