The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the remand of the immediate past President of the Students’ Union Government of the Federal University Oye Ekiti, Comrade Adio, by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State, describing the development as a miscarriage of justice and a violation of the student’s fundamental rights.
The association, in a statement issued on Monday by its National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, alleged that the former student leader was remanded despite being the complainant in the matter before the court.
According to the statement, the association was informed that Adio had instituted the case himself and was not facing any criminal charges before the court.
NANS, however, alleged that the matter was turned against the former SUG president through the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the presiding magistrate.
The student body described the development as “judicial rascality,” accusing the authorities involved of abusing due process and infringing on Adio’s constitutional rights.
In response, Akinteye said he had directed the NANS Joint Campus Committee Chairman for the Ekiti Axis and the association’s National Head of Administration to commence mobilisation of students.
He said the planned actions would include peaceful and lawful protests at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions until Adio is released and justice is served.
The NANS president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students and promoting the rule of law.
“The National Association of Nigerian Students will not stand by while the rights of Nigerian students are trampled upon.
We remain committed to defending justice, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of every Nigerian student,” the statement read.
