A former councillor in Plateau State, Daniel Danjuma Chong, has been shot dead after gunmen attacked Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased, popularly known as Hon. Star, previously represented Rim Ward in the Riyom Legislative Council.

The attack was confirmed on Monday by the Berom Youth Moulders Association, which said the assailants stormed Torok village in Rim community at about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, opening fire on residents.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, the association described the killing as another disturbing incident in the area and condemned the attack.

According to the group, Chong was killed during the invasion, while another resident, identified as David Dachollom Danjuma, sustained a fatal gunshot injury before the attackers fled.

The association further alleged that the gunmen came from Kess, also known as Bangai Fulani, and carried out the assault before escaping from the community.

Expressing sympathy to the bereaved family and residents of Torok community, the group urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to launch a thorough investigation, arrest those responsible and ensure they are prosecuted.

It also decried the continued loss of lives in the area, describing the recurring attacks on innocent residents as unacceptable.

Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, had yet to respond to enquiries as of the time this report was filed.
