The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports that he is lobbying to become the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike said he remained committed to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election and would work towards securing victory for the President without necessarily occupying any position in the campaign organisation.
The minister’s position was disclosed on Monday in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
Reports had listed Wike among political leaders and government officials allegedly interested in heading the APC campaign council.
Reacting, however, the former Rivers State governor said the claim was untrue, stressing that he had not held discussions with anyone about either leading or joining the proposed campaign council.
Wike said he was currently outside the country on a break after spending more than 30 days overseeing activities and projects in the FCT.
According to him, the period was spent commissioning completed projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing projects, particularly those scheduled for commissioning in December and January.
He said his attention would return to the implementation of the FCT mandate upon his arrival in Nigeria, in line with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Wike added that he would also focus on improving Tinubu’s electoral prospects in both Rivers State and the FCT.
“I do not need to be the DG or even a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
