A 64-year-old man, Abubakar Aliyu, has been detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Gombe State over the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl.

Aliyu, a grandfather who runs a medicine shop in Arawa Quarters, Gombe, was reportedly arrested after the teenager’s mother raised an alarm over the alleged incident.

The suspect was presented to journalists on Wednesday by the NSCDC spokesperson in the state, CSC Saad Buhari.

During questioning, Aliyu allegedly admitted having inappropriate sexual contact with the minor on three occasions after she visited his shop at night to purchase medicine.

The suspect claimed that the girl arrived at about 11pm and that he initially asked her to return home because of the late hour.

He reportedly said the teenager later remained at the shop, where the alleged abuse occurred.

Aliyu also disclosed that he gave the girl small amounts of money on some occasions following the incidents.

The suspect reportedly expressed remorse over his actions, admitting that the allegation had damaged his standing in the community.

He further claimed that his wife had warned him against associating with the girl inappropriately but that he failed to heed the warning.

The allegation has reportedly created tension within Aliyu’s family, with some of his children distancing themselves from him and restricting their children’s contact with him.

A family member, who spoke anonymously, said relations between the family and some neighbours had also become strained following the development.

Buhari said the NSCDC was investigating the case and would subsequently arraign the suspect before a court in Gombe.

He added that the alleged offences violated provisions of the Gombe State Penal Code Law and the Child Protection Law.
