A yet-to-be-identified woman has been found dead inside a church premises in the Obelewo area of Osogbo, Osun State, with her left wrist allegedly severed.
The discovery reportedly prompted police detectives to visit the scene as authorities commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, preliminary findings indicated that the woman had allegedly been killed and her left wrist cut off and taken away by unidentified persons.
The police spokesperson said the motive for the killing and the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.
He said, “The investigations revealed that the deceased was slaughtered and her left wrist severed and taken away by unknown persons.”
Iniedu said efforts were underway to establish the identity of the deceased and determine what led to her death.
He added that the State Command Investigation Department had commenced a probe into the incident, while the corpse had been deposited at a hospital mortuary for autopsy.
“The corpse was deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy,” he stated.
The police assured that investigators would work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
The incident has heightened concerns over violent crimes involving the mutilation of victims in the region.
In a related incident reported by PUNCH Metro in May 2015, a woman was found dead in a drainage along OGTV Road in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with her private parts reportedly mutilated.
Residents were said to have discovered the body in the drainage before further examination revealed the mutilation. The circumstances surrounding that incident were also initially unclear.
