NFF Election Crisis: Gusau to address media over resignation reports

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, is expected to address journalists in Abuja on Thursday amid growing controversy surrounding the federation’s forthcoming elective congress and reports of his alleged resignation.

The briefing is scheduled to hold at the NFF Secretariat inside the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where Gusau is expected to clarify issues relating to the September 27 election.

The NFF boss is also expected to respond to speculations that the National Sports Commission may suspend the elective congress and appoint a normalisation committee to oversee the football body.

Although reports have claimed that the Federal Government directed Gusau and members of the NFF board to step down, the National Sports Commission has yet to confirm such claims, saying consultations are ongoing over developments in Nigerian football.

There have also been unverified reports suggesting that several members of the NFF Executive Committee are considering resigning, but the federation has not issued any official statement on the matter.

The elective congress, billed for Lafia, Nasarawa State, was shifted from September 26 to September 27 to enable delegates and stakeholders return from Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar on September 25.

The federation has fixed August 27 to 30 for screening of candidates, while the final list of cleared contestants is expected in September ahead of the campaign period.

Gusau’s appearance before the media follows widespread speculation over his whereabouts.

He was, however, seen publicly in Abuja on Wednesday during the unveiling of the Nigeria Premier Football League’s new branding and a fresh title sponsorship agreement.
