Ondo: Ex-guber candidate Jegede quits PDP, keeps next political move secret

Former Ondo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, has resigned his membership of the party amid its prolonged internal crisis.

Jegede conveyed his decision in a resignation letter dated August 7, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Ward 11, Owode/Imagun Ward, Akure South Local Government Area, Fabiyi Kole Adewale.

The former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state said his resignation took immediate effect.

Confirming his departure from the opposition party, Jegede said he would announce his next political move at the appropriate time.

“Yes, I can confirm my resignation from the PDP. I will also let you know my next political move,” he said.

Jegede served as the PDP’s candidate in the 2016 and 2020 Ondo State governorship elections, where he contested against the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress.

His resignation comes amid political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections and follows the departure of some of his associates from the PDP to the African Democratic Congress.

Among those who recently left the party was Balarabe Abiodun Akinwunmi, a close associate of Jegede, who has aligned with the political coalition backing the ADC.

Akinwunmi is currently the ADC candidate for the Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency in the 2027 elections.

Jegede’s exit is expected to generate further reactions within the Ondo State political landscape, particularly as opposition parties intensify efforts to reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
