Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria after 12 years of providing services in the country.
The company said its Nigerian operations would be wound down effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Uber announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday, citing a review of its business operations.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company stated.
Uber launched its services in Nigeria in 2014, beginning with Lagos before expanding its presence to other parts of the country.
Reflecting on its years of operation, the company thanked Nigerians for using its platform to connect with independent transportation providers.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” Uber said.
The company acknowledged that the shutdown could disrupt the routines of customers who relied on its services for commuting, visiting family and friends and moving around the city.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” it added.
Uber said its help centre would remain accessible until September 23, 2026, to assist customers with outstanding account-related enquiries.
“Thank you for welcoming us into your city,” the company said.
