The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has alerted security agencies to an alleged plan by purported Peoples Democratic Party local government officials to take over council secretariats across the state.
The APC, in a statement issued by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, alleged that the purported PDP chairmen and councillors planned to invade the 30 local government secretariats and the Area Office on Thursday.
The party claimed that political thugs allegedly mobilised from within and outside the state had been lined up to assist in carrying out the proposed takeover.
According to the APC, the alleged plan was linked to the recent political developments surrounding the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke, which it said had encouraged the purported PDP council officials to regroup.
The party further alleged that the plan was being coordinated with some officials of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, accusing the union of supporting the state government in the matter.
The APC also cited a Supreme Court judgment in one of the cases instituted by the purported PDP council officials, claiming that the court had referred to them as persons unknown to the law.
It therefore called on the Osun State Police Command, Department of State Services and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to take preventive measures against any action capable of threatening public peace.
The party maintained that the dispute over the local government leadership should be resolved through the courts, noting that the matter was still before the Court of Appeal.
It warned the purported PDP council chairmen against taking the law into their own hands, describing any attempt to bypass the judicial process as unlawful.
The APC also recalled the killing of one of its reinstated council chairmen, Remi Abass of Irewole Local Government Area, who it alleged was murdered by suspected political thugs.
The party said those accused of the killing were facing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The APC stated that the dispute over the tenure of the reinstated council officials remained pending before the Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State.
It consequently urged security agencies to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate action should there be any attempt to disrupt public order.
As of the time of filing the report, neither the Osun State Government nor the state chapter of the PDP had responded to the allegations.
