The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, has uncovered an alleged self-kidnapping scheme in Akure North Local Government Area, arresting four suspects linked to the plot.
The suspects were among 53 persons apprehended by the security outfit for various alleged offences across the state, including kidnapping, murder, cultism, rape, cattle rustling, theft, impersonation and conspiracy.
The state Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Monday while parading the suspects, explaining that the alleged kidnappers had staged the incident and used social media to create the impression that an abduction had occurred.
Adeleye said the investigation took a different turn after one of those who reported the alleged kidnapping was found to be connected to the scheme. According to him, the suspect eventually led operatives to a house where the supposedly abducted person was found.
He warned residents against rushing to circulate unverified reports, stressing that false claims of criminal activities could cause unnecessary panic and divert security personnel from genuine emergencies.
The commander also disclosed that Amotekun operatives had arrested 21 suspected illegal immigrants in Owo. He said the suspects were allegedly unable to produce the required ECOWAS travel documents and would be transferred to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation.
Adeleye further revealed that the corps had disrupted an alleged diesel theft operation involving petroleum products worth millions of naira, reportedly diverted from a construction company and quarry site along the Ondo Road axis of Akure.
He reaffirmed the corps’ determination to intensify operations against criminal elements across the state, urging residents to assist security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could aid the fight against crime.
