The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Isiyaku Usman, for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl and stealing two mobile phones from her in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Habib, the suspect allegedly lured the minor into an uncompleted building on September 6, 2026, where he reportedly took two mobile phones from her before sexually assaulting her.
The incident came to the attention of the police after the victim’s 37-year-old father, a resident of Kari village in Darazo, lodged a complaint with the command.
The PPRO said, “On the same date at about 0800hrs, the victim was on her way to a neighbouring house with two Android phones of the same make, Techno A31, when one Isiyaku Usman ‘m’, 20-years-old, of the same address, lured her into a nearby uncompleted building, robbed her of the phones and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.”
Habib said police detectives immediately launched an investigation into the complaint, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who was allegedly found with the two stolen phones.
He added that both the victim and the suspect were taken to the Darazo General Hospital for medical examination, while the police also obtained statements from them.
According to the police spokesman, Usman allegedly confessed to the offences and remained in custody as investigation continued.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged assault and directed that the case be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.
Habib said the suspect would be prosecuted after the completion of the investigation.
The commissioner reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, while urging parents and guardians to pay close attention to the safety and movements of children under their care.
Aliyu assured residents that the police would pursue the matter and ensure that justice was served.
