The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a man, Manaseh Bitrus Jatau, in connection with the death of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah, in Kaduna.

Jeremiah’s lifeless body was discovered along Mai Angwa Street in the Romi area of Kaduna at about 7am on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying the discovery was reported by the Officer-in-Charge of the Romi Outstation.

According to Hassan, detectives were immediately deployed to the scene, where the woman was found with cotton wool stuffed in her nostrils.

He said the officers rushed Jeremiah to St Gerald Hospital, Kakuri, Kaduna, where a doctor pronounced her dead. Her remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

The police spokesman said preliminary investigation revealed that Jatau was the last person known to have contacted the deceased and had asked her to meet him at Ebano Joint, Romi.

Hassan said the suspect was later traced to his workplace at Tomato Jos Company in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna, where he was arrested.

He added that Jatau allegedly confessed during interrogation to having a fight with Jeremiah in his room over a telephone call from another woman, which allegedly resulted in her death.

The suspect also reportedly told investigators that he dumped Jeremiah’s body in an open field near his residence in an attempt to conceal the incident.

Jatau remains in police custody as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The police said he would be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.

The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, condemned acts of violence and urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully.

He also assured the public that the command would pursue justice for the deceased and bring anyone found responsible to book.
