Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced on Wednesday by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a post shared on Instagram.
Olusoji described the late actor as “the Lion of Lufodo” while announcing his passing on behalf of the family.
He wrote, “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourned the veteran actor.
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film both in Nigeria and abroad.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and began his acting career in British television before featuring in several international productions.
After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became a prominent figure in the country’s film industry, starring in numerous productions and earning widespread recognition for his commanding performances.
His contributions to the entertainment industry earned him several honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.
Beyond acting, Jacobs was also a film executive and, together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, was involved in the Lufodo Group and efforts to advance the performing arts in Nigeria.
His death marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most recognisable acting figures, whose career left a lasting imprint on the country’s theatre, television and film industries.
