Suspected bandits have killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service and burnt his body following an attack on a surveillance team in Woko village, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The deceased, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I Ibrahim Usman Babagiwa, was reportedly attacked alongside an Inspector of Immigration on October 6, 2026, while the duo were carrying out a surveillance operation along the Tungan Taya-Woko axis.

The surviving officer sustained machete injuries during the assault but managed to escape from the attackers.

The Niger State Command of the NIS disclosed that the injured officer was responding to treatment and was in a stable condition.

The command made this known in a statement dated October 12, 2026, signed by its Public Relations Officer, DSI M. Abubakar, on behalf of the Comptroller of Immigration in the state.

According to the statement, Babagiwa’s remains were discovered in a burnt state two days after the attack.

The deceased was subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Despite the killing, the immigration command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling irregular migration and addressing other security challenges along Nigeria’s international border.

The attack adds to security concerns in Niger State, where armed groups have continued to pose threats to residents and security personnel.
