Gumi defends clerics in politics, says action better than praying from sidelines

Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has defended the participation of religious leaders in partisan politics, insisting that clerics who actively engage in governance contribute more to society than those who merely pray for political leaders from the sidelines.

Gumi made the remark on Monday in a post on his Facebook page amid growing debate over whether Islamic scholars should contest elective offices or remain focused solely on religious activities.

The conversation has intensified in recent months following the political ambitions of several respected clerics, including former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Sheikh Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, who emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Another Islamic scholar, Sheikh Bashir Ahmad Sani of Sokoto, had earlier declared his intention to contest the state’s governorship election, further fuelling discussions on the role of religious leaders in politics.

The development has continued to generate mixed reactions, particularly among Muslims in northern Nigeria.

Opponents of clerics participating in partisan politics argue that the political space is characterised by hostility, division and smear campaigns capable of eroding the respect and moral authority religious leaders command.

They maintain that scholars are better positioned to offer spiritual guidance, counsel leaders and promote accountability without becoming active politicians.

However, supporters insist that national development requires capable and principled individuals to participate directly in governance.

They argue that scholars with the necessary integrity, competence and leadership qualities should not be discouraged from seeking public office if they are committed to serving the people.

Adding his voice to the debate, Gumi said there was nothing inappropriate about religious scholars taking part in politics, stressing that meaningful leadership demands more than offering prayers from a distance.

According to him, clerics who are willing to endure the challenges associated with politics deserve greater commendation than those who remain outside the political arena praying for elected officials.

His comments come as discussions continue over the increasing involvement of religious leaders in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
