President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to take immediate steps to vacate the court order freezing an account belonging to the Osun State Government.
The President, in a statement personally issued on Thursday, said although he had no objection to the anti graft agency carrying out its statutory responsibilities, he was uncomfortable with the timing of the action.
Tinubu said he was “deeply embarrassed, not by the EFCC’s exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency’s action.”
He therefore instructed the commission to return to court without delay to withdraw the order and discontinue all legal actions it had initiated against the Osun State Government in relation to the account.
“Accordingly, I have directed the EFCC to immediately proceed to the court to vacate the order and discontinue whatever action it has instituted against the Osun State Government in this regard,” the President stated.
The development comes amid growing public attention over the freezing of the state government’s account, a move that had generated political reactions and concerns over its implications.
Further details are expected as the situation unfolds.
