What started as social media ridicule over a photograph of a graduating student has taken an unexpected turn, with Nigerians rallying around the young man and raising N14m to support him.
Madumere Felix Nwachikerendu, a History graduate of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, became the centre of attention on social media after photographs from his final-year project defence were posted on X on August 31, 2026.
The images attracted widespread attention, with some social media users making disparaging comments about his appearance, clothing and delayed graduation.
However, the narrative changed after an X user, Mercy Ninian, who said she knew Felix, disclosed the difficult circumstances he reportedly endured while pursuing his university education.
Ninian revealed that Felix struggled financially throughout his time at the university and had to engage in various menial jobs to survive.
According to her, the young graduate fetched water, washed clothes for fellow students and sold peanuts and other items to raise money.
She also claimed that he sometimes slept in classrooms because of his financial difficulties.
She further disclosed that Felix initially struggled to pay his school fees after gaining admission and eventually ran into academic difficulties that resulted in his withdrawal from the university for failing to meet the required cumulative grade point average.
Rather than abandoning his education, Felix reportedly retook the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination and eventually returned to the university to continue his studies.
The revelation prompted several people who knew him to share similar accounts of his struggles, including a former roommate who reportedly accommodated him for months during his first year.
Felix later responded to the photograph that had triggered the online mockery, explaining that his delayed graduation was not due to laziness or a lack of commitment to his studies.
He said he was supposed to graduate with his colleagues in the History Department in 2023 but fell behind academically and financially.
According to him, although he experienced setbacks, he remained determined to complete his education.
As his story gained traction online, Nigerians began mobilising financial support for him.
The donations reportedly climbed from millions of naira to more than N10m as the campaign attracted increasing attention on social media.
By Thursday, an X user identified as Wizarab announced that the fundraising had reached N14m.
He thanked Nigerians for their generosity, describing the development as an unexpected transformation of what began as an attempt to mock Felix.
He also disclosed that another user, @Skolex5, would assist Felix with financial investment to ensure the funds were properly managed.
Felix subsequently expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the fund, promising to release a video to formally appreciate the supporters.
Amid the attention, however, the graduate warned social media users against spreading unverified information about him.
He specifically dismissed reports claiming that he had been attacked, stating that he was safe and that nobody had visited his home to harm him.
Felix also linked his journey and the unexpected public support to his faith and a promise he made to his late mother.
He said he created a poster on the day of his sign-out as a tribute to his mother, whom he had promised not to disappoint, engage in illegal activities or bring disgrace to.
Reflecting on the dramatic turn of events, Felix urged members of the public to remain upright, obey God and treat others kindly, saying good deeds would eventually yield results.
He also rejected attempts by some social media users to compare his story with that of another person who had previously attracted public attention.
Felix said he was not interested in competing with anyone or determining who deserved greater recognition, stressing that he believed his own journey was unfolding according to God’s plan.
The development has transformed Felix’s experience from one of online ridicule into a story of resilience, determination and public compassion.
