A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

The lecturer was reportedly found dead after checking into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob, who was described by the police as a commercial sex worker.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2026, and was reported to the police at about 8pm.

According to the police, Uwuigbe had allegedly sent Jacob out of the room to purchase water. Upon her return, she reportedly found the lecturer lying motionless on the bed.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, said three people had been arrested in connection with the case.

Ikoedem said, “On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.

“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room.”

The police spokesperson identified those in custody as the hotel owner, the manager and Jacob, adding that detectives had commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

She further disclosed that Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that the deceased was a member of the institution’s staff but said the incident occurred outside the university premises.

Aladenika said the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were a private matter, stressing that the woman involved was not a student of the university.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
