Sowore criticizes US airstrikes in Nigeria, speaks on sovereignty

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the reported United States airstrikes on Nigerian territory, describing the action as a dangerous infringement on the country’s sovereignty and a sign of leadership failure.

Sowore made the remarks on Friday via his X handle while reacting to reports that a village in Sokoto State was hit on Christmas Day during an operation said to have targeted suspected terrorist elements.

He accused both the United States and the Nigerian government of mishandling the situation, warning that Nigeria was being marginalised in decisions affecting its national security.

“I have read reports that the United States government launched attacks on Nigerian soil on Christmas Day, purportedly targeting terrorist groups within Nigeria.

“Although the Nigerian government now claims it was aware and describes the operation as a joint effort with vague ‘international partners,’ it is evident that the strikes were carried out without the genuine authority or informed consent of the weaklings masquerading as government under President Bola Tinubu,” Sowore wrote.

He further expressed concern over Nigeria’s capacity to defend its territorial integrity, warning that the country was being sidelined in critical security decisions affecting its citizens.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria lacks the capable and sovereign leadership required to protect its people and its territory. As a result, the country has been reduced to a bystander while its sovereignty is violated. Only true, tested, and informed leadership can protect Nigerians,” he added.
