Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has warned that the African Democratic Congress may plunge into irrelevance if it ignores Peter Obi as its presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2027 elections.
Fayose, who spoke on Monday during an interview on Arise Television monitored in Lagos, said the party’s future rests heavily on Obi’s influence and national appeal.
According to him, Obi’s emergence in the Labour Party transformed the once obscure platform into a formidable force within a short period.
“Obi is the only person in ADC that matters,” Fayose said. “When he moved to Labour Party, which many didn’t rate, the party secured seats in the House of Representatives.”
The former governor, however, stopped short of predicting the outcome of the next presidential race.
“I’m not declaring that Obi will win, and I’m not dismissing the possibility either.
But if ADC fails to put him forward, they will be worse off than they are today,” he added.
Obi and several prominent politicians from the South-East recently defected to the ADC in what observers consider a strategic regrouping ahead of 2027.
