Dispute turns fatal as 17yr-old salesgirl dies after alleged stabbing by employer

Residents of Lagos have been thrown into mourning following the death of a 17-year-old sales assistant, Ihechidere Favour Uka, who was allegedly stabbed by her employer during a disagreement at a cosmetics shop.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 6.30pm on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the shop where the teenager worked.

Sources familiar with the matter told our correspondent that what began as a minor misunderstanding quickly degenerated into a violent confrontation.

Family members said Ihechidere had been sent on an errand by her employer, identified as 30-year-old Ibekwe Ezinne Mary, but returned later than expected.

This reportedly triggered a heated exchange between both parties.

During the argument, the employer was alleged to have slapped the girl, who reacted by slapping her back once.

The situation reportedly escalated moments later when the employer allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Ihechidere in the chest.

The teenager was said to have bled profusely and collapsed. Despite efforts to save her, she was later confirmed dead.

The killing sparked outrage within the neighbourhood, with residents describing the atmosphere around the shop as sombre and tense.

Many expressed disbelief that a disagreement over lateness could result in the loss of a young life.

Ihechidere’s relatives described her as diligent and well-behaved, saying she took up the sales job to support herself and ease the financial pressure on her family.

They lamented that her death underscored the risks faced by young people working in informal settings.

The suspect has since been arrested and is currently in police custody.

While unconfirmed reports indicated that she admitted to the act, official comments from the police were still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.

The family has called on law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of minors employed in small businesses, with rights groups urging stricter enforcement of child protection and labour laws.

Legal practitioners also noted that the suspect could face serious criminal charges if the allegations are proven in court.
