BREAKING:  Mimiko dumps PDP, cites personal reasons amid long silence on party affairs

A former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, bringing an end to years of dwindling involvement in the party’s activities.

Mimiko’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated April 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 7 in Ondo West Local Government Area, where he cited “strictly personal reasons” for his decision.

In the personally signed letter, the former governor acknowledged that he had gradually withdrawn from active participation in the party, noting that the period of disengagement allowed him to reflect and consult widely before arriving at his decision.

He stated that his exit should not be interpreted as borne out of ill will, stressing that he holds no grudges against any individual within the party and wishes the PDP success in its future endeavours.

Mimiko further clarified that persistent speculation over his political status necessitated a clear declaration of his position, affirming that he is no longer a member of the party.

Despite quitting the PDP, the ex-governor maintained that he remains committed to Nigeria’s democratic development and would continue to collaborate with like-minded individuals in pursuit of national progress.

Political observers in Ondo State said the development did not come as a surprise, given Mimiko’s prolonged absence from partisan politics and the earlier defection of many of his loyalists to the All Progressives Congress.

Several of his core associates had previously aligned with the APC and played roles in the emergence of the incumbent governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

A former Chief Press Secretary to Mimiko, Eni Akinsola, confirmed the resignation, stating that the ex-governor had formally submitted his letter but declined to provide further details.
