The senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared that he would resign from the All Progressives Congress if President Bola Tinubu ever shows disrespect to opposition parties or the Catholic Church.
Kalu, however, maintained that Nigerians should not expect the President to give political advantage to opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Abia State governor stated this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he defended Tinubu’s approach to political competition.
According to him, politics is naturally competitive, and no politician would be expected to make it easier for political rivals to gain an advantage.
He said the President had remained fair to members of the opposition and had not victimised anyone outside the provisions of the law.
Kalu stressed that every Nigerian was entitled to equal treatment under the law, insisting that anyone who abides by the country’s laws has nothing to fear.
The lawmaker recalled Tinubu’s assurance that the 2027 elections would be free and fair, adding that the President had made it clear he would not interfere with the democratic process.
He, however, warned that his loyalty to the ruling party would end if Tinubu was found to be disrespectful to opposition voices or the Catholic Church.
“Any day Tinubu disrespects the opposition or the Catholic Church, I will resign from the APC,” Kalu said.
His remarks come amid growing political debate over the state of Nigeria’s democracy and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
