Five people, including four construction workers and a 14-year-old student, have died following two separate building collapses in Kano State.
Ten others were rescued from the incidents, which occurred on Saturday in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area, and Kurna, Fagge Local Government Area.
The Kano State Fire Service disclosed the casualties in a statement issued on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.
The first incident occurred at about 2:34pm at Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, where a building under construction, measuring approximately 50 by 50 feet, collapsed on six workers.
Firefighters deployed from the state headquarters rescued two of the workers alive. They were identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar.
Four others were pulled from the debris unconscious but were later pronounced dead.
They were identified as 18-year-old Sunusi Surajo, 20-year-old Bashir Ibrahim, 25-year-old Ibrahim Ibrahim and 30-year-old Abubakar.
The six victims were taken to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital before being handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.
A second tragedy occurred shortly after 2:40pm at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya School behind a primary school in Kurna, Fagge.
According to the Fire Service, nine students, aged between 12 and 15, were affected when part of the school building collapsed.
Firefighters from the Kurna Fire Station succeeded in rescuing eight of the students.
However, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, who was brought out unconscious, was later confirmed dead.
The rescued students were subsequently handed over to the school headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.
The authorities have commenced investigations to determine what led to the two separate collapses.
The Kano State Fire Service urged property owners, contractors and construction workers to strictly adhere to approved building standards and safety measures, particularly during the rainy season.
The agency also called on residents to promptly alert emergency responders whenever they notice building-related hazards, stressing that early intervention could help reduce casualties.
