A security guard identified simply as Stanley has been shot dead in a suspected cult-related attack in the Sangotedo area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Friday night at the Royale Estate in the area, where the assailants reportedly opened fire around 10pm.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, told PUNCH Metro that suspected cult members invaded the estate and began shooting before fleeing the scene.

Videos and posts circulating on the social media platform NaijaConfra also alleged that the attack was carried out by suspected cultists.

However, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the shooting, while stating that the identity and motive of the assailants had yet to be established.

The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the victim was attacked by two unidentified men riding a motorcycle.

“The incident occurred. He was shot by two unknown individuals on a motorcycle.

The command has launched an investigation into the incident. No suspect yet,” she said.

The police spokesman added that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.

The latest incident comes weeks after another security guard, identified as Godwin, was allegedly killed by suspected cultists in the Abule Ijesha area of Yaba, Lagos.

PUNCH Metro had reported that the attackers arrived in a vehicle, shot Godwin close to his duty post and allegedly used an axe to attack him.

Three other people were also reportedly injured during the attack.

The recurring attacks have heightened concerns over the activities of suspected cult groups in parts of Lagos, particularly their alleged use of firearms and other weapons to carry out violent attacks.
