A mother of two, Hafsat Yusuf, has asked a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, to compel her former husband, Muhammad Ahmad, to reimburse her for expenses incurred on their children and provide monthly maintenance.
Yusuf, through her lawyer, I.M. Umar, told the court that she had largely shouldered the responsibility of caring for their two children since the couple divorced in 2025.
The lawyer said the couple married in 2017 and had two children, aged eight and five, before their marriage was dissolved.
Umar alleged that his client had, at various times, paid expenses for the children, including school fees amounting to N200,500 for an academic session.
He argued that the responsibility for the children’s education and general welfare rested on the defendant and urged the court to order Ahmad to refund the money.
The complainant also asked the court to direct the defendant to take responsibility for the children’s education, medical expenses, feeding and general welfare.
She further requested N150,000 monthly as maintenance.
In addition, Yusuf asked the court to grant her access to the defendant’s residence to retrieve her LG refrigerator and a gold necklace said to weigh three grammes.
However, Ahmad disputed the amount his former wife claimed to have spent on the children’s education.
He told the court that he had already sent her N100,000 towards the children’s first-term school fees.
The defendant also said he had been giving Yusuf N30,000 monthly for feeding and other needs, adding that the amount was what he could currently afford.
Ahmad said he was willing to return the refrigerator but denied knowledge of the gold necklace allegedly kept at his residence.
He urged the court to require his former wife to provide evidence of the amount she claimed to have paid as school fees.
The judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, subsequently adjourned the matter until September 2, 2026.
The court directed the complainant to appear with her witnesses and produce evidence supporting her claim concerning the payment of the children’s school fees.
