The Lagos State University has commenced disciplinary proceedings against students allegedly linked to the reported assault of one of its students at a privately operated hostel outside the institution’s campus.
The university, while condemning the incident, said the affected student, who is of the College of Medicine, Ikeja, had reported the matter to the police.
The development was contained in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile.
According to the statement, the alleged assault occurred at a private hostel located outside the university premises.
Thomas-Onashile said although the incident took place off campus, the university had initiated its own disciplinary process against students allegedly involved, in accordance with its rules and regulations.
She said the institution had zero tolerance for violence, intimidation and harassment involving members of its community, irrespective of where such incidents occurred.
“The university management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” she stated.
The university official noted that the police had taken appropriate steps following the victim’s complaint, while LASU continued with its internal investigation.
She reminded students of their responsibility to uphold good character and conduct themselves responsibly, stressing that such behaviour was inconsistent with the values of the institution.
The university also urged students to remain vigilant and promptly report security threats or other incidents capable of putting their safety at risk.
Thomas-Onashile appealed to parents and guardians to work with the institution in promoting discipline and responsible behaviour among their wards.
She said LASU remained committed to protecting the welfare and safety of its students and maintaining an environment conducive to learning and academic development.
