The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old Field Loan Officer with Moniepoint, Thlakham Daniel, over an alleged N74m fraud involving seven Point of Sale operators in Damaturu, the state capital.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Adamu Ali, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the police, the seven POS operators separately reported the alleged fraud at the ‘A’ Divisional Headquarters, Damaturu, accusing the suspect of visiting their businesses and profiling their accounts under the guise of assisting them to obtain loans.
The complainants reportedly alleged that Daniel later used their accounts to secure loans without their knowledge or authorisation.
Following the complaints, detectives attached to the division commenced an investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
The police also recovered a vehicle allegedly purchased with proceeds from the suspected fraudulent transactions.
The command said preliminary findings put the total value of the alleged fraud at about N74m.
The suspect was also said to have confessed to the offence during interrogation, although the police stressed that investigation was still ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the transactions and establish whether other persons were involved.
The Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, urged members of the public to be careful about granting access to their bank and digital financial accounts.
He also advised residents to promptly alert the police whenever they notice suspicious transactions involving their accounts.
