An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Yola, Adamawa State, for allegedly attacking a serving judge with a cutlass and severely injuring his hand.

Garba, a resident of Korawa village in Fufore Local Government Area of the state, was accused of attacking the presiding judge of the Mayo-Inne Area Court, Dauda Hamman, during court proceedings.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, August 31, while the judge was handling a case involving Garba and another man, identified as Ismail Yusuf.

The Adamawa State Police Command said Garba allegedly became enraged during the proceedings, picked up a cutlass and attacked the judge, inflicting serious injuries on his hand.

Following the incident, police operatives arrested the suspect and initially took the case to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore before transferring it to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola on September 4 for further investigation and prosecution.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that investigators concluded their probe before Garba was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, on Monday.

According to the police, the suspect was charged with causing grievous hurt, an offence contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

When the charge was read and interpreted to him, Garba pleaded guilty and reportedly attributed his action to the devil.

The court subsequently ordered that the octogenarian be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.

The police said ASP Zakka Musa is prosecuting the case on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan.
