A 39-year-old Nigerian businessman and Lagos-based real estate executive, Edwin Omokhuale, has been arrested in Dublin, Ireland, over an alleged $23m fraud involving an Australian mining company.
The arrest was announced by the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency in a statement published on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
According to the NCA, Omokhuale was apprehended by officers of An Garda Síochána at Dublin Airport on Wednesday afternoon while preparing to board a flight to Paris.
The agency said the businessman was arrested on a UK warrant and is facing allegations connected to money laundering arising from the suspected fraud.
The alleged scheme, investigators said, involved approximately $23m, equivalent to about £17m, and occurred in early 2023.
The NCA said investigators believed the suspected fraudsters were operating from the UK when they allegedly deceived employees of the Australian mining company into transferring funds into bank accounts under their control.
Omokhuale, who was reportedly living in the UK when the alleged fraud occurred, is expected to appear before a court in Dublin.
The NCA said extradition proceedings would commence to facilitate his return to the United Kingdom, where he is expected to face the allegations against him.
The agency stated, “Omokhuale, who lived in the UK at the time of the fraud, will appear in court in Dublin as extradition proceedings to bring him back to the UK commence.”
The case remains an allegation, and Omokhuale has not been convicted of the offences for which he was arrested.
