The Lagos State Police Command has summoned officers accused of assaulting a resident, Olugbenga Adeleke, following the circulation of a video in which he narrated his alleged ordeal.
The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this on Friday, saying the Divisional Police Officer of Ebenezer Police Station, Alagbado/Ojokoro, had been directed to produce the officers before the Commissioner of Police on Monday, September 14, 2026.
Adeleke, a resident of Akera Tide community in the Alakuko/Alagbado area of Lagos, had petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and some human rights organisations over the alleged assault, unlawful detention and extortion.
He alleged that the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, while he was returning home. According to him, some men who were not dressed in police uniforms stopped him and, before he could establish why he was being stopped, one of them allegedly struck him in the face.
Adeleke claimed he was subsequently dragged into a bus and taken to Ebenezer Police Station, where he alleged that he was beaten again and detained overnight without being told the reason for his arrest.
He said his phone was the only item found on him and alleged that the following morning, he was brought out of the cell and asked to sit under a tree within the station. He further claimed that he was told to provide money for his release.
Adeleke said he sustained a serious injury to his eye during the incident and called for an investigation to establish the identities of those involved, preserve CCTV footage and other evidence, interview witnesses and take appropriate action against anyone found culpable.
He also alleged that other individuals were brought to the station during his detention and claimed that they were subjected to extortion.
Reacting to the allegations, Adebisi said the command had commenced an investigation after the video surfaced online. She added that the Complaint Response Unit had contacted Adeleke and invited him to appear, but he had yet to respond.
“The Command has seen the circulating video. The Complaint Response Unit has reached out to the complainant, who has been invited but is yet to respond,” she said.
Adebisi added that the DPO had been directed to bring the officers involved before the Commissioner of Police, noting that both Adeleke and the officers were expected at the command on Monday for further investigation.
“The Command has commenced investigation, and the DPO has been directed to bring the officers involved before the CP. Both parties are expected at the command on Monday, September 14, 2026, for further investigation,” she added.
