The Taraba State Police Command has ordered a transparent investigation into the death of a police officer, Ejeh John, who reportedly sustained injuries during an arrest operation and later died while receiving medical treatment.

The command, in a statement issued on Sunday by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, said a suspect allegedly linked to the incident had been arrested and was being held in police custody.

According to the statement, investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death, with the command assuring the deceased’s family, colleagues and members of the public that the matter would be handled with the seriousness it deserved.

The Commissioner of Police, Edwin Obegheghagha, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally, objectively and transparently, while ensuring that due process was followed throughout the process.

The command said the death of the officer would not be ignored or swept under the carpet, adding that anyone found to have criminal responsibility would face the full weight of the law.

“The Command understands the concerns of the family, colleagues and members of the public and assures them that this is not a matter that will be treated lightly or swept under the carpet,” the statement said.

The police further stated that it would continue to support and engage with the family of the deceased officer, while appropriate welfare and administrative procedures would be implemented in accordance with existing Nigeria Police Force policies.

The command appealed to members of the public to remain patient as investigators work to conclude the probe and determine the facts surrounding the incident.

It reiterated its commitment to justice, accountability and professionalism, stressing that the rule of law would be upheld throughout the investigation.
