The Executive Chairman of the Ondo State Competition and Consumer Protection Agency, Oluyemi Fasipe, has hailed the passage of the Consumer Protection Bill into law by the Ondo State House of Assembly, describing it as the beginning of a new era for consumer protection in the state.
Fasipe, who personally witnessed the Assembly’s plenary session where the bill was passed, said the legislation would provide a stronger legal foundation for protecting consumers and ensuring fairness in the marketplace.
The bill was passed during the Assembly’s plenary in Akure on Tuesday, marking a significant development in the efforts to strengthen the operations of the Ondo State Competition and Consumer Protection Agency.
Reacting to the development, Fasipe commended the Speaker of the Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, and his deputy, Gbegudu Ololade James, for their contributions to the passage of the legislation.
He also praised the Chairman and members of the House Committee on Commerce and Industry, particularly its chairman, Barrister Felix Afe, for their commitment and diligent consideration of the bill.
Fasipe expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for prioritising the rights and welfare of consumers, noting that a strong consumer protection framework was necessary for building a fair, responsible and thriving economy.
He also acknowledged the staff of the agency for their years of work towards ensuring that the legislation became a reality, saying their dedication had helped bring the process to fruition.
According to him, the passage of the bill was only the beginning, as the real task would be ensuring that its provisions translated into effective protection for consumers, fairness in commercial dealings and greater accountability among businesses.
“We are ready. A new era of consumer protection has begun in Ondo State,” Fasipe said, congratulating the people of the state and all those who contributed to the passage of the legislation.
