A fire outbreak at the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State, has destroyed property estimated at N20m.

The Federal Fire Service, Kano State Command, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying its personnel responded swiftly to the incident and prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the university.

The emergency was reported at about 11:38am after security personnel at the institution alerted the Commander of the Nigeria Police Academy, according to the FFS.

Following the distress call, firefighters from the POLAC Fire Station, led by ASF II Nura Haladu, were deployed to the university to tackle the blaze.

The FFS said the team, on arrival, discovered that the fire had affected files and other materials stored in an office at the Architecture Department.

Firefighters from the FFS, alongside personnel of the Kano State Fire Service, battled the inferno and eventually contained it using two medium water jets.

According to the service, property worth about N700m was exposed to the fire, but assets estimated at N680m were successfully salvaged.

It added that property valued at approximately N20m was destroyed in the incident.

A preliminary assessment suggested that faulty electrical wiring might have triggered the fire, although the FFS said a comprehensive investigation had been ordered to determine the actual cause.

The State Controller of the FFS, Kano Command, DCF Sadiq Usman Mahmud, commended the firefighters and their counterparts from the Kano State Fire Service for their prompt response and collaboration.

Mahmud urged schools, offices and members of the public to regularly inspect electrical installations and replace damaged or faulty wiring to prevent similar fire incidents.
