Gunmen have shot dead a man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, popularly known as Asa, in the Dele Yes Sir community, Osogbo, Osun State.
Adekunle was reportedly attacked by unidentified assailants between 1:30am and 2am on Tuesday, with the circumstances surrounding the killing still unclear as of the time of filing this report.
The incident reportedly occurred near a recreation centre in the community, where armed men were said to have opened fire before fleeing the area.
The Osun State Police Command, however, said its preliminary findings indicated that the killing might be connected to cult activities.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said the victim was rushed to a hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ojelabi said, “What happened in Dele Yes Sir is suspected to be a cult-related attack. The incident occurred around 2am on Tuesday.
“We got information that some armed men went to the area and started shooting sporadically. One Adejuwon Adekunle, aka Asa, was shot and rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body was deposited at the morgue.”
The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police had ordered the transfer of the case to the Criminal Investigation Department for a more discreet investigation.
He added that no arrest had been made in connection with Adekunle’s killing as of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the command disclosed that some persons had been invited and questioned over the killing of an Accord Party chieftain, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, in Ile-Ife on Sunday.
Ojelabi said the persons were interrogated by detectives at the CID but declined to disclose their identities, stressing that no arrest had been made in connection with the case.
The development followed reports that another corpse had been recovered within the premises of Mayfair Motor Park, Ile-Ife, bringing the reported death toll from the shooting incident at the park to two.
Oyeyemi, who was reportedly killed during a clash involving him and a group led by another National Union of Road Transport Workers leader known as Sibi, was buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo on Monday, according to traditional rites.
