A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Oluwole Oluwaseun, has died in an incident being investigated by the police as an apparent suicide.
Oluwaseun was a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The university management said it received information about an emergency involving the student at about 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
According to the institution, its Quick Response and Security Team immediately moved to the location after receiving the distress call.
The Nigeria Police was also contacted, while officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.
The student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor reportedly confirmed his death.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution said relevant information and items recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police.
The university said the police had commenced investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Management also notified the relevant student affairs authorities to provide necessary follow-up, particularly on the welfare and support of students affected by the incident.
The Vice Chancellor, Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues, while urging members of the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
The university further encouraged students facing emotional distress, relationship problems, financial difficulties or other personal challenges to seek help from trusted individuals and available support structures.
Bamire reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the welfare of its students and staff, stressing that no student should feel compelled to face overwhelming challenges alone.
