JAMB clarifies ‘not admitted’, ‘admission in progress’ statuses on CAPS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified the meanings of the “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System.

The Board explained that candidates who see “Not Admitted” on their CAPS should not necessarily conclude that they have lost the opportunity to secure admission.

JAMB gave the clarification in an explainer video shared on Thursday, advising candidates to regularly check their CAPS for possible changes as institutions continue with the admission process.

According to the board, the “Not Admitted” status simply indicates that a candidate has not been offered admission at the time of checking, but does not mean such a candidate will not eventually be admitted.

It also explained that “Admission in Progress” could mean that an institution had recommended a candidate for admission, but the process was yet to be concluded.

The board said the status could occur when an institution’s admission officer had proposed a candidate, but was still awaiting the recommendation of the head of the institution.

It added that “Admission in Progress” could also be displayed where the head of the institution had recommended the candidate but JAMB was yet to approve or reject the proposed admission.

JAMB, however, warned candidates against treating the status as confirmation of admission, stressing that a recommendation by an institution does not automatically translate into a final admission offer.

The board said a proposed admission could still be rejected if the candidate failed to satisfy the required conditions or prerequisites.

According to JAMB, a candidate becomes officially admitted only after the board approves the offer, at which point the candidate would receive the notification: “CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION.”

Candidates whose admissions are approved would then be able to accept or reject the offer through the CAPS platform.

JAMB further urged candidates to keep monitoring their CAPS, noting that admission statuses could change at different stages of the process until the final stage, when successful candidates can print their admission letters.

The board advised candidates to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information and updates concerning their admission status.
