The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, over the death of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, who sustained severe burns in a fire incident at Nassarawa village, Gwaram Local Government Area.

The incident occurred around 11:30pm on September 29, 2026, at the residence of the deceased.

The command’s spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, alleging that Abbas attacked his elder brother’s residence and poured petrol into his room before setting it ablaze.

According to the police, the suspect claimed to be of unsound mind at the time of the incident.

Basiru and his wife were reportedly trapped in the fire and sustained serious burns. Relatives initially took the couple to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment.

However, Basiru later died from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

Following the development, police operatives commenced an investigation and subsequently arrested Abbas in Sara town, also in Gwaram Local Government Area.

The command said the case was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation.

The suspect has since been arraigned before a court for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He also advised members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.
