Why four Rivers lawmakers reversed stance on Fubara impeachment move

Fresh details have emerged on the sudden reversal by four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who previously backed efforts to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office.

The lawmakers, who had withdrawn from the impeachment push, were said to have returned to the negotiating table in pursuit of political guarantees ahead of the 2027 elections, Vanguard reported.

A source familiar with the talks, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that the legislators were less concerned with allegations of misconduct and more interested in securing return tickets to the Assembly.

“With the way they’ve related with the governor, they’re not sure of coming back,” the insider said.

“What they want is assurance — that they will return to the Assembly next year. That is the agreement they are after.”

The source added that the crisis took a new turn in December when Fubara defected to the All Progressives Congress.

“They realised the governor would automatically secure his ticket in the APC.

“If they don’t get similar guarantees, they risk being politically stranded,” he explained.

Tensions in the state have continued to as different political blocs reposition themselves ahead of the next general election.
