he National Association of Nigerian Students has dismissed reports suggesting that it reached an agreement with the National Youth Service Corps to collect capitation fees from students, describing the claim as a product of misinformation.
The clarification followed a disclaimer by the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters concerning a Facebook post by the NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, on the proposed mechanism for collecting the association’s capitation dues.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS explained that the post was based on an informal conversation and should not be interpreted as evidence of an agreement or collaboration with the NYSC.
“NANS has not announced any partnership with the NYSC for the collection of capitation dues. The impression created was as a result of misinformation arising from the publication of an informal Facebook discussion,” the association said.
The student body maintained that its constitution provides for the payment of capitation dues, just as students contribute Student Union dues in their various institutions.
It stressed that while NANS could initiate partnership proposals with government agencies or other institutions, no proposal or request had been submitted to the NYSC for an arrangement concerning the collection of the dues.

NANS said it would announce any organisation eventually engaged to facilitate the collection of the dues after completing the necessary arrangements, urging students and the public to disregard claims that such an agreement with the NYSC already exists.
